About "The Friends' Hospice Paphos"

The Friends' Hospice Foundation is an independent charity and a member of the worldwide hospice movement.
It is administered by a voluntary Board of Trustees in accordance with the laws of the Republic of Cyprus.
The Hospice is situated in an independent wing of the St George's Polyclinic in Paphos and serves the entire population of the town and all of the surrounding districts.

Our mission is to provide Palliative Care for those suffering from a life-limiting illness for which a cure is no longer possible. Palliative Care alleviates symptoms. It does not seek to cure the underlying condition. This care improves the quality of life by means of medical, psychological, emotional and spiritual care.

We care for patients suffering life-limiting illnesses. These include Cancer, Motor Neurone disease, Parkinson's disease, Heart Failure and, Respiratory disorders. The Friends' Hospice is intended for short-term care. We offer our services to everyone in need of them, regardless of nationality, religion or ability to pay.

The Friends' Hospice is intended for short term care and not for long-term medical treatment. Palliative Care is that which treats with the intention of alleviating symptoms and does not seek to cure the underlying condition. This care is designed to improve the quality of life by means of nursing, medical, psychological, emotional and spiritual care.

Our History

The Friends’ Hospice opened in 2006 with one allocated bed in the General Ward of the Evangelismos Hospital in Paphos.

In 2007, we were able to move into a separate, independent wing within Evangelismos Hospital where we had three permanent beds and the capacity to operate a fourth in exceptional circumstances. By 2009, four permanent beds were required to meet demand.

That expansion continued. The Friends Hospice then occupied the entire first-floor wing in which it was housed and provided care for up to seven patients until it was forced to look for alternative accommodation in July 2013.

In August 2013 the Friends’ Hospice was made an offer by the St George & Blue Cross Private Hospital Ltd for a wing containing 6 bedrooms at their St George’s Polyclinic which was accepted by the Hospice Foundation and we took our first patients in our new home on 21st October 2013.

The Cyprus Government has recently quantified the requirements for the Paphos region as being six Palliative Care Beds and one Palliative Care Team. The Friends’ Hospice adequately satisfies this requirement.
